I have always loved trees, especially the magnificent ones. The towering Redwoods of Northern California. The Grand Oak trees in New Orleans. The Cypress trees that rise effortlessly from water. And of course, the delicate beauty of flowering trees like the Cherry Blossom.
Trees come in all shapes and sizes, but what truly captivates me is their ability to endure.
They withstand hurricanes, floods, snowstorms, animals, and perhaps most challenging of all, people. We climb them, carve into them, fight over them, and build with them. And yet, despite all of this, trees persist. They stand the test of time. They grow deep roots, rise tall and strong, and many live for hundreds of years. If trees could talk, they would offer us powerful lessons.
So what do trees and people have in common?
Like trees, people come in many shapes and sizes. We require different environments and different kinds of nurturing to grow. Each of us thrives under unique conditions, just as trees flourish in different soils and climates. I see trees as a symbol of growth, both individual and organizational.
People are the branches. Each one unique, textured, and full of character. Together, we form something far greater than ourselves: a living, interwoven system that creates a strong and vibrant organization.
So ask yourself this:
As individuals and organizations, wouldn’t it be incredible to be as strong and resilient as these magnificent trees?
To remain standing when change arrives, trying to uproot us?
To bend, lean, and learn with grace instead of snapping under pressure?
To build networks that stretch farther than we ever imagined, like the roots of a Redwood?
When I launched my coaching practice, I spent time reflecting on what my logo should represent. The answer was clear: a tree. Not just any tree, but a people tree.
Why? Because my purpose is to help individuals and organizations grow and perform at their best. Each person is a branch, distinct and essential, capable of reaching higher and brighter than they ever thought possible. And together, we create the whole. Without each other, there is no tree.
We all have symbols that remind us of what truly matters. For me, nature is a constant reminder of how deeply interconnected we are: organizations, teams, communities, and individuals. How we choose to grow, behave, and perform is always a choice.
So I’ll leave you with this:
What decision do you want to make today?
And what kind of tree do you want to become?
